150 years of Photographic Technology was used in Big Shot No 32 – Meet the Photographers
For this project, the RIT Big Shot photography team used photographic technologies from the past and present to make multiple pictures of the Kodak Tower. One camera exposed a wet plate collodion plate, a process invented in the 1850s. An 11″ x 14″ plate was exposed using a 17″ lens. Two cameras used 4″ x 5″ dry plate film, a film type similar to the kind George Eastman himself would have used in the 1880s; and, three film cameras, including a Nikon F3T with a 28mmƒ22, a Hasselblad 500CM with a 40mm, 4 x 5 Wisner with 90mm ƒ22 and an 8 x10 Deardorf large format with a 200mm ƒ22 exposed Kodak Portra 160 C-41 film camera captured the compelling view. Two Nikon D810 digital cameras recorded the official Big Shot digital exposure

Professor Willie Osterman is a Professor in the Photographic Arts Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York where he has been teaching, researching and working as an active artist since 1984. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in photography with a minor in art history from Ohio University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Design and Photography with the award of two teaching fellowships from the University of Oregon.
After graduating he became a visiting assistant professor at the University of Oregon. His teaching experience includes the Ansel Adams Workshops in Yosemite National Park, and in traveling workshops in twelve US states as well as in Italy, France, Austria and Croatia. As Former Curator of Photography at the University of Oregon Museum of Art, he received two grants from the National Endowment of the Arts. He was a printing assistant to the production of the Ansel Adams Special Edition Prints working with Mr. Adams in Carmel California and has worked as a contract photographer for the Eastman Kodak Company. His publication ‘Déjà View: A Cultural Re-Photographic Survey of Bologna, Italy’ in its second edition is now out of print. During his sabbatical for the year 2009/10 he received a Fulbright Scholars Award help create the first Master Degree program in Photography at the Academy of the Dramatic Arts, University of Zagreb, Croatia.

Nick Brandreth is a photographic craftsman / documentary photographer living in Rochester, NY. Nick currently holds the position of Historic Process Specialist at the George Eastman Museum . An Alumni of Rochester Institute of technology and Eddie Adams Barnstorm XXII Workshop (2009). His work has been published at home and abroad for the likes of The Wall Street Journal and Mercedes Benz to name a few. Nick continues to pursue his personal vision using his own handmade photographic materials for his documentary work..

Eric T. Kunsman is a photographer and book artist based out of Rochester, New York where he has returned to pursue his personal work. Eric is a Lecturer for the Arts & Imaging Studies Department in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and also teaches for the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences both of which are housed at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was formerly an Assistant Professor at Mercer County Community College where he was also the coordinator of the photography program. He has nationally taught workshops, lectured on digital printing. Eric holds his MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and holds an MS in Electronic Publishing/Graphic Arts Media, BS in Biomedical Photography, BFA in Fine Art photography all from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. His photographs and books have been exhibited internationally and are in several prominent collections throughout the United States. He currently owns Booksmart Studio, which is a fine art digital printing studio specializing in numerous techniques and services for photographers and book artists.

Dan Hughes is a visiting asst professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. He is highly adaptable, driven, light-hearted, and has 7 years of progressive experience in the photographic industry providing photographic education, social media, and partner relationships. As comfortable chatting with “cream of the crop” high profile professionals to folks who just picked up a camera. Caring as much for the technology and craft as I do the rich history of photography, I embed traditional concepts and transition traditional techniques into educational content with the most recent technology.
